Thousands join Janaza in Brahmanbaria flouting social distancing rule

According to report by Dhaka Tribune and UNB, defying the government’s restrictions on mass gathering to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, thousands of people attended the namaz-e-janaza of Mawlana Jubayer Ahmed Ansari in Brahmanbaria on Saturday.

The Islamic cleric, who was the nayeb-e-ameer of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, had passed away at Bertala village in the district’s Sarail upazila on Friday night.

The janaza was held at the Jamia Rahmania Bertala Madrasa premises around 10am. Locals said about 50,000 people attended the janaza from different areas of the division, including Dhaka, conducted by Jubayer’s son Hafez Mawlana Asad Ullah on the madrasah premises and on Dhaka-Sylhet highway around 10am, defying the government’s strict social distancing rules.

The incident took place just days after the government announced that the entire country was at risk of succumbing to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has killed more than 154,800 people worldwide.
