Fashion Designer Christian Siriano has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by producing surgical masks with three pleats, elastic ear bands, and a small metal strip that could be molded to fit the nose from his prewar Beaux-Arts town house on Fifty-fourth Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City.
Almost 2,000 masks were produced in the first week, with the first box being shipped directly to the new field hospital at the Javits Center.
It all began with a tweet at the New York State Governor: “If @NYGovCuomo says we need masks my team will help make some. I have a full sewing team still on staff working from home that can help.” which resulted in a representative from Cuomo’s office accepting the designer’s offer via direct message.
